BlackBerry indicated this in a series of posts on its Twitter account, where it announced the availability of the app shortly after 2 a.m. Manila time and posted about the five-million mark before noon.
"Next 5 million in line - your turn! Open up BBM and click 'I got the email' to get started on #BBM right away!" it said in a tweet at 10:16 a.m. Manila time:

It advised users they could start using BBM immediately if they signed up at BBM.com, but reminded others of its phased rollout to keep up with demand.

A separate report on The Next Web said the phased rollout sought to prevent its servers from crashing.
The Next Web noted the initial figure of five million is "pretty impressive."
"BlackBerry said earlier that six million people had signed up to get updates about the app in ahead of its launch, while an apparent one million Android owners were 'using the unreleased version of BBM for Android' following the partial launch in September," it added.
