First off you’ll find the VivoBook F series of laptops come in four different colours, which makes a nice change from either black or white as is offered by most people. The blue and red are not excessive, but I have to say that the blue is particularly fetching. That is such a vivid and cheerful colour!

Of course, as they fit into the ultraportable market they are very light and have been designed to snap closed into a chic and very slim device, quick to slip into the nearest bag or laptop carrier. I’ve managed to get one of these into my handbag and I do not own the most capacious of bags…

The 2-Second Instant On is no small and boring feature, obviously, and can be a real plus when you’re in a bind or have limited time to check your information. There are few things as tedious as having to wait for your computer to laboriously boot up, especially if you’re in a rush. You won’t get that here, my friend, oh no…

Alongside a very thin and responsive keyboard that has plenty of key spacing to prevent that fat-finger thump of three keys at once (I really hate that), you get the multi-touch display so you can eke the most out of the Windows 8 design. That operating system really does need a touchscreen to get the highest levels of performance and with the ASUS VivoBook F series, you pretty much can.

Then you get the Smart Gesture Technology that gets what you’re trying to do and makes your life easier. I think I need to do an entire post on that feature as it’s a winner. Not to be outdone by a mere keypad, the audio is supported by SonicMaster Technology which is always a winner.

HP Announces Spectre 13 x2 Hybrid Ultrabook

Since the launch of Windows 8, many users have been waiting for something that does a better job of spanning the gap between laptops/Ultrabooks and tablets. We’ve seen sliders, twist screens, laptops with touchscreens, foldable laptops like the Yoga, and even a few with detachable screens. HP now enters the market with one of the latter, as the Spectre 13 x2 that has a detachable screen.

Given that we’re talking about Ultrabook internals – and a 13” display – pricing is going to be substantially higher than what you’ll pay for a traditional tablet. HP also goes full Windows 8 here, so there’s no secondary SoC running Android like in the ASUS Transformer Book Trio. HP hasn’t yet provided us with a full rundown of the specifications, but it appears the Spectre 13 x2 will sport a 1080p display and the tablet portion pretty much only includes a microSD slot. The dockable keyboard meanwhile adds a couple USB 3.0 ports, HDMI port, and a full size SD card slot; it also includes additional battery capacity and has a backlit keyboard.

While the idea of a 13.3” laptop/hybrid is good, I do have to question the utility of a 13.3” tablet. I’ve used Dell’s XPS 12, and frankly it just feels massive when in tablet mode, and that’s a slightly smaller display size. On the other hand, typing on a 13.3” sized chassis and keyboard definitely sounds more welcoming than a 10” or 11.6” keyboard, so the detachable tablet aspect is basically a nice extra for those times when you want to leave the keyboard behind.

HP has managed to cram all of the hardware into a fanless chassis, which means they’re likely using the Core i3-4020Y (6W 1.5GHz) and Core i5-4210Y (6W 1.5-1.9GHz); it’s possible HP also supports the Core i7-4610Y (11.5W 1.7-2.9GHz), but that seems unlikely with a fanless design. (I’ll update if I hear anything more on the subject.) Pricing on the Spectre 13 x2 starts at $1099, hopefully with at least a 128GB SSD and 4GB RAM (preferably more, but that’s probably just wishful thinking). Availability is scheduled for October 2013.

ASUS VivoBook S400CA Specifications

The S400CA is a stunning little laptop, light and slim enough to easily carry around with you all day and done out in a snazzy black and silver colour scheme. There's loads of space on the wrist rest, which adds to the comfort of using the Chiclet-style keyboard. Although it doesn't look very different to the keyboard found on so many other laptops on the market, it's unusually accurate for touch-typing, with well-sized keys. There’s no unusual positioning or key spacing to throw off your accuracy, either. The touchpad is large and accurate, but centrally positioned in a way that makes it unlikely to be accidentally brushed while typing. The touchpad buttons are built into to the pad, rather than being individual keys, but we had no trouble hitting them accurately.

The 1,366x768 14in touchscreen has a glossy finish that makes colours look particularly vivid, but despite that, it isn't too reflective. However, it's not particularly bright, and its narrow viewing angles mean your viewing position has a major impact on how colours appear. Fortunately, there's plenty of scope to tilt the screen until you find your optimal viewing angle. The touchscreen is accurate and responsive, although the screen quivers a little if you tap it too vigorously, so you'll want to be gentle.

The laptop achieved an overall score of 33 in our benchmark tests. This is a rather low score, but it's still adequate for most applications, from document creation to light image editing. The 1.8GHz Intel Core i3-2365M processor only has two cores, though, so it will take a while to render the output from a video-editing package, for example. The processor has an on-chip Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU. This failed our Dirt Showdown test, showing it's no gaming chip, but you will at least be able to run older titles such as Left 4 Dead 2. Battery life was six hours and 28 minutes – reasonable, but rather low compared to many Ultrabooks we’ve seen.
