Afternoons Turn Us into Lazy, Lying Cheaters: Study

We've all been there: We arrive at the office at 9 a.m., proceed to eat a nice healthy breakfast, bang out some stellar work, and are totally pleasant to our colleagues. Then, 3 p.m. hits, and we're snappy, unfocused, and hitting the vending machine hard.

While this scenario might seem more like your daily dossier than anything particularly scientific, it actually is: New research has suggested mornings really are when we're at our absolute best, and by the afternoon-worn out from our earlier attempts at being angelic-we're more likely to lie, cheat, or indulge in lazy behavior, reported NBC News.

"From the moment people wake up in the morning, daily life requires the exertion of self-control," write the study authors, Maryan Kouchaki and Isaac Smith of Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics. "In deciding what to eat for breakfast, where to go and why, or even what to say and to whom, people regulate and control their desires and impulses.

"Normal, unremarkable experiences associated with everyday living can deplete one's capacity to resist moral temptations," they write. "In other words, people are more likely to act ethically and to overcome temptation in the morning than later in the day."

The study, published this week in the journal Psychological Science, adds to past research that has suggested self-control isn't an infinite resource, and by the afternoon, we've run out of it.

The authors tested this theory by setting up a pretty basic experiment where students were paid money to answer a question in a certain way-whether the answer was true or not, and they found that the participants in the afternoon sessions answered dishonestly.

In another experiment, people were given the choice to read some intelligent fare (The New York Review of Books), or some super-light stuff (People magazine). Nearly 60 percent of the volunteers in the afternoon sessions chose the People magazine, whereas only 40 percent choose the gossip in the morning.

So, what does this mean for you? Basically that it's key to be aware of our afternoon shortcomings, try to organize our days accordingly. As NBC News points out, challenging or moral should be done in the morning, while work that requires less focus should be saved for the afternoon, when we;re more likely to slip into a serious slump.

3 Ways to Make Your Business More Efficient

Credit: Entrepreneur.com || Lindsay LaVine

It's no secret the workplace is changing. How we work, collaborate, and communicate with each other is increasingly shaped by technology and tools to increase productivity. But what happens when we get bogged down with e-mails and move away from the actual work?

Last week, thought leaders from all over the country gathered at Chicago Ideas Week to discuss the future of work, and how we can do it better. Here's how to cut the inefficiencies in your office.

"The crux of inefficiencies of work come down to lack of clarity," says Justin Rosenstein, co-founder of San Francisco-based collaborative software company Asana. When 70 to 80 percent of your day is spent doing work about work (multiple meetings, endless e-mails) instead of doing actual work, that's a problem, he says.

Rosenstein, formerly of Facebook and Google, and Asana co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, created a solution that increases productivity by centralizing tasks. Companies like Pinterest, Dropbox and Uber have embraced Asana. Rosenstein says three key principles around clarity can help businesses become more efficient. They are: clarity of purpose, clarity of plan, and clarity of responsibility.

1. Clarity of Purpose
When employees know the larger context, they can make better decisions and better prioritize, says Rosenstein. "Clarity of purpose gives us the information we need to do our best work," he says. Lack of clarity may lead to a lack of motivation.

2. Clarity of Plan
If the team isn't clear on the plan, there's lots of confusion and everyone's wondering what will happen next. At Asana, when they start a project, they ask: What are all the steps needed to reach our goal? Team members can add steps to a single, shared list, the list is always up-to-date, and everyone has access to it. Of course, steps may be modified as the project progresses, but Rosenstein says the knowledge that nothing will fall between the cracks creates calm and comfort among team members. Everyone knows when each step will happen and what's next.

3. Clarity of Responsibility
On a big project, it's bound to happen: one person thinks someone else was doing a task and nobody ends up doing it, or more than one person does it and you wind up with a duplication of efforts. With a productivity tool, this won't happen. Everyone on the team goes through the list and signs up for a task – either because it's their passion or they're taking one for the team, Rosenstein says.
"The emergent effect of all three is everyone knows what they're doing, when they’re doing it, and why," Rosenstein says.

'The Faces of Facebook' displays all of Facebook's 1.2 billion profile pics in one project

This is the overview of Faces of Facebook.

Facebook has over 1.2 billion users, and a new web project from programmer Natalie Rojas has brought them all together as a mosaic of user pics on The Faces of Facebook.

Visually impressive, the site loads up as a supposed view of Facebook's 1.2 billion users. You can select any area of the picture to zoom in for a closer look at clusters of individual profile images, all chronologically ordered, according to Rojas. Hovering over a user's picture will give you their name and "FACE #," representing the order all profiles were created. Clicking a user's picture will even launch their full profile page on Facebook.

Of course, if a profile is marked as private, no information that isn't publicly available is shown here or when following the link to the full profile. "Relax. We're not breaking any Facebook privacy rule because we don't store anyone's private information, pictures or names," Rojas writes.

"We've just found a harmless way to show 1,260,866,093 Facebook profile pictures and organize them in chronological order"

The Faces of Facebook experience is enhanced if you sign in to your Facebook account while visiting. The project will give you the FACE #s for you and your friends, and also point out the areas where you each lie on the overview.
So visit the page and see which of your friends has the longest Facebook tenure. Just understand that none of you have been around longer than Mark Zuckerberg - he is, naturally, FACE #1.

The causes and cures for excessive sleepiness

While many suffer conditions like insomnia, resulting in lack of sleep for nights together, there are others who suffer the other extreme condition – excessive sleepiness.

If you rank amongst those, read on to know about the various probable causes and cures for the condition.

Jump Link for the Cure

Causes of Excessive Sleepiness

The extreme opposite of insomnia is the disorder known as hypersomnia, a condition of excessive sleepiness. Following are some of the known causes of this condition:

1. Irregular Work Hours
If you work night shifts and sleep during the day, you have most certainly already bid adieu to a ‘normal’ sleep cycle. Since the sleep cycle gets disrupted, your body ends up being deprived of its regular and required hours of sleep, resulting in sleepiness and grogginess throughout the waking hours.

2. Absence of Physical Activity
Would you call yourself lazy? Or does sheer lethargy define you? If yes, you may also additionally suffer (or as you may more complacently be imagining as blissful advantage) excessive sleepiness. When the body does not get its required dosage of exercise, it falls into a state of slow metabolism functioning, resulting in more lethargy and sleepiness.

3. Excessive Weight
Overweight or obese people are also likely to suffer hypersomnia, as per studies. Since the excessive weight tends to slow down the metabolic rate of the body, the energy levels also run low, consequently. The result is sleepiness extending beyond the required and normal hours.

Cures of Excessive Sleepiness

While you may be suffering excessive sleepiness due to any of the above or any other reasons, fret not! There are possible cures as well that can help you sleep better and not feel drowsy all the time.

1. Follow a Timetable
Just the way you did in school, bring about a routine in your work life as well. Eating meals on time, doing activities at a set time each day and going to bed at the same time every night will help regularize the body and make it accustomed to the routine you set for it.

2. Exercise
The cure for all that ails human kind, regular and appropriate exercise can take care of sleeping disorders as well. Exercise as part of your routine will ensure that the metabolic rate of your body stays high, thereby leading to higher levels of energy and lesser requirement of sleep.

3. Medication
There are natural ways to cure the disorder of excessive sleepiness, so you should resort to medication ONLY under the supervision of a medical professional and ONLY if the situation has become unmanageable.

Tons of medication is available in the market nowadays to deal with almost any kind of disorder or illness, finding the root cause of the condition can often lead to a better cure. So, dig deeper before you pick up those pills!

Gates calls Ctrl+Alt+Del command a mistake!

Bill Gates has described the decision to use Ctrl+Alt+Del as the command needed to log on to a PC as a mistake.

Originally designed to trigger a reboot of a PC, it survives in the Windows 8 operating system as the command to access the task manager toolbar and is still used in older versions to log on.

In an interview, the Microsoft co-founder blamed IBM for the shortcut, saying he had favoured a single button.

The keyboard shortcut was invented by IBM engineer David Bradley.

Originally he had favoured Ctrl+Alt+Esc, but he found it was too easy to bump the left side of the keyboard and reboot the computer accidentally so switched to Ctrl+Alt+Del because it was difficult to press with just one hand.

During IBM's 20th anniversary celebrations, he said that while he may have invented it, Bill Gates made it famous.

His involvement in the invention has made him something of a programming hero though- with fans asking him to autograph keyboards at conferences.

Finger strike

The shortcut, also known as the three-finger salute - came to prominence in the early 1990s as a quick fix for the infamous "blue screen of death" on PCs.

But speaking at a fundraising campaign at Harvard University, Mr Gates said he thought that it had been a mistake.

"We could have had a single button, but the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn't want to give us our single button."

While some loathe the clunky command, others took to news site Reddit to express their fondness for it.

"I feel a single button would be a mistake," said one.

"There's a conscious commitment and in many cases a sense of satisfying sword play in executing the two-handed finger strike of Ctrl-Alt-Del."

NASA Earth Map Shows Where Pollution Kills

BY: ALYSSA DANIGELIS

Many of us would like to think that air pollution is a problem that can simply dissipate after a few days. But the health effects from it linger, and what we can’t see can kill us. Earth scientists studying air pollution have just released a map that shows air pollution deaths over time on a global scale.

The stark map shown above was created at NASA Earth Observatory by data visualizer and designer Robert Simmon. This atmospheric computer model shows the average number of deaths per 386 square miles per year due to air pollution between 1850 and 2000. It’s based on data from Jason West, an assistant professor of environmental sciences and engineering at University of North Carolina. He and his colleagues published their findings earlier this year in  Environmental Research Letters.

“Dark brown areas have more premature deaths than light brown areas,” the NASA map explanation reads. The map shows that air pollution has been particularly deadly in eastern China, northern India and Europe — all areas where urbanization has added lots of fine particulate matter to the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution began.

Blue areas on the map are locations where the scientists found a decline in premature deaths relative to 1850. They attribute those numbers to improvements in air quality. In the southeastern United States, the scientists think the change could have been caused by a decline in biomass burning in the past 160 years.

Seeing some blue areas made me think that the outlook isn’t entirely bleak for humanity. New York officials recently reported that the city is experiencing the best air quality in 50 years. They credit an effort to get buildings to convert to cleaner fuels for heating. With less pollution causing cardiovascular and lung problems, the city estimates that 800 lives have been saved and 2,000 hospital visits prevented each year, Kate Taylor reported in the New York Times.

But just how bad is air pollution in general? West and his team found that toxic outdoor pollution known as fine particulate matter directly causes 2.1 million deaths worldwide every year. That makes this is one deadly problem that won’t just blow over.

Originally, there were only three prefixes or area codes used for mobile phones: 917 for Globe Telecom, 918 for Smart Communications and 973 for Express Telecom, the three existing mobile companies at the time. As service grew rapidly throughout the 1990s and even until today, existing codes have been exhausted and new codes have been added to fulfill demand. [Source: Wikipedia]
