Amputees soon can 'feel' objects with a Bionic Hand

Scientists from Switzerland's Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne and the BioRobotics Institute in Pisa, Italy led by Micera and Stanisa Raspopovic have developed a bionic hand which enables amputees to feel again.

By surgically implanting electrodes on the nerves of an amputee and connected to a bionic hand, the person can determine the texture and shape of objects.

Sørensen was the first amputee to test this bionic hand being disabled for 9 years when he lost his left hand on a fireworks explosion. "Suddenly you could see my left hand was talking to my brain again and it was magic," Sørensen told USA Today.

The bionic hand is still a prototype and so after the experiment, the bionic hand was detached from Sørensen for the device to be further improved.

The scientists eyes the potential that soon this device will be commercialized and it would be a leap of technological innovation for the amputees.

DDR4, a 4th generation of DDR SDRAM from Kingston Technology is coming its way this late 2014!

[Source: Kingston Technology] During the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Kingston Technology is showcasing the fourth generation of DDR SDRAM. DDR4 will make its official debut for computer systems in late 2014, introducing faster speeds while requiring less power than current DDR3 SDRAM. Set to be the mainstream memory technology through the end of the decade, DDR4 introduces major improvements to the DDR SDRAM specification. While DDR4 has numerous advantages over DDR3 in terms of speed, density, and power consumption the memory technology will not be backwards compatible with existing systems.

Why DDR4?
The computing landscape has changed. DDR3 has been pushed beyond its initial planned specifications to meet the changing environment, even with 1866MT/s and 2133MT/s speeds added and lower power DDR3U 1.25V, we are nearing the limits of its capabilities. Reduced power requirements aside, the demand for increased performance beyond 2133 motivated the transition develop the next evolution of memory. The following specifications have been identified for DDR4 memory*:

Power:

  • 1.2V Standard Voltage
  • 1.1V Low Voltage
  • 1.05V Ultra Low Voltage

Three Data Widths:

  • x4
  • x8
  • x16

Densities:

  • 4GB
  • 8GB
  • 16GB

Speed/Bandwidth:

  • 1600MT/s
  • 1866MT/s
  • 2133MT/s Launch Speed
  • 2400MT/s
  • 2667MT/s
  • 3200MT/s
  • 4000MT/s (possible extension)
  • 4266MT/s (possible extension)

Connector:

  • 288-pin DIMM
  • 256-pin SODIMM

Form Factors:

  • Unbuffered ECC or non-ECC
  • Registered
  • Load Reduced
* Based on JEDEC (Joint Electron Devices Engineering Council), the standards body for memory.

SteamOS Beta, officially released for download, it's free!

The first Steam OS beta, a Linux-based OS, has just been released after it was unveiled last September 2013. Valve is also advising that only Expert Linux Hackers may attempt the installation.

It has also a desktop mode for those who are worried about the functionality of having an operating system's use outside of gaming.

Here's the official system requirements:

  • 64-bit processor
  • 4GB or more of memory
  • 500GB disk
  • NVIDIA graphics card (AMD and Intel coming soon)
  • UEFI boot support

There are two ways to install SteamOS.

  •  One method will create a “SteamOS System Restore USB stick” that will restore SteamOS from the USB drive to your testing device.
  • The second method uses a Debian installer which requires a bit more manual work to setup. Both methods will erase everything on your device, Valve caution.
