Grand Theft Auto Online launch faces server worries

The creator of Grand Theft Auto has warned there might be teething problems as its online version launches.

Last week Rockstar North admitted it was facing "unanticipated" pressure because sales of GTA 5 had been stronger than expected.

"We are working around the clock to buy and add more servers," its blog said.

But it added that matters could be "more temperamental than such things usually are" because using so many computers introduced their own issues.

In the online version of the 18-rated violent crime game, up to 16 players can interact simultaneously within a virtual environment and create personalised avatars.

It is included free with every copy of the GTA 5 console video game. According to one analyst's figures, more than 15 million units of the title had been sold by early last week.

"At a conservative estimate I would expect about two million players to log on to GTA Online within the first 24 hours," added Keza MacDonald, UK games editor for IGN.com, the video game and entertainment site.

"Rockstar has never done an online game of this scale before, so they are totally unproven in terms of their network infrastructure.

"And even the highly successful World of Warcraft at its peak didn't have as many people playing online at once as GTA is likely to have, so it wouldn't surprise me if there were problems."

Other bestsellers have faced issues after their servers failed to cope with demand.

Owners of Electronic Art's Sim City - which requires players to be logged into its servers to play - experienced waits of up to 30 minutes to get started and then sluggish gameplay when it went on sale in March.

EA later apologised and offered a free title to those affected as compensation. It said more people had logged on than it had expected, adding they then played differently to the way its testers had.

The previous year Activision Blizzard saw its servers for Diablo 3 come under severe pressure after its launch.

The term #error37 trended on Twitter after players were shown the code alongside a message telling them to wait and try logging on later. At one point the firm took its websites offline to reduce demand.

Valve reveals haptic game controller for release in 2014

The controller has two trackpads that provide haptic feedback
By Dave Lee

Games developer and publisher Valve has shown off its Steam Controller, the final part of its strategy to bring its PC-based platform to the living room.

The controller offers two trackpads which provide "haptic" feedback capable of delivering various physical sensations to the player.

Valve said it offers a better way to play games that have traditionally been controlled with a keyboard and mouse.

Gamers have been invited test the device before it goes on sale in 2014.

"Traditional gamepads force us to accept compromises," the company said via its announcement page.

"We've made it a goal to improve upon the resolution and fidelity of input that's possible with those devices.

"The Steam controller offers a new and, we believe, vastly superior control scheme, all while enabling you to play from the comfort of your sofa."

Research and testing

The controller is the third announcement the company has made this week. On Monday, it outlined plans to create an entire Linux-based operating system for running games, and followed up on Wednesday with details of the Steam Machine, essentially a new type of games console.

The widely-anticipated controller completes what Valve will hope is a strategy that can shift gamers that use traditional PCs - which is seen as a market headed for decline - and coax them into the living room.

However, the biggest challenge the company faces in doing so is in convincing gamers who have spent years playing titles, particularly first-person shooters, by using a combination of keyboard and mouse that a handheld controller can offer a more enjoyable solution.

The company said it had spent a year researching and testing different control methods. It said the haptic feedback offered new possibilities for creating immersive gaming.

"This haptic capability provides a vital channel of information to the player - delivering in-game information about speed, boundaries, thresholds, textures, action confirmations, or any other events about which game designers want players to be aware."

The company is to send out 300 early versions of the controller to people who sign up for beta testing.

Giant owl eyes

Rob Crossley, associate editor of Computer and Video Games, has been following Valve's announcements throughout this week. He has described the latest move as "fearless".

"Controller design standards haven't changed since the first PlayStation... the D-pad, the two sticks... that's evolved only slightly over the last 20 years.

"Sure, it looks a little funny - those two giant owl eyes - but I think that this could lead to a change in the way we look at controllers."

Valve is banking on the trackpads providing the same kind of precision offered by a mouse, Mr Crossley added.

Valve will solicit feedback on the controller from 300 early beta testers
"I think they believe this is their best attempt at trying to map the precision of the mouse onto a gamepad.

"If it does pay off, if they do manage to emulate the mouse on a controller, that opens up whole new genres."

Some had speculated - somewhat hopefully - that Valve would make a surprise announcement about the next instalment in its Half-Life series.

However, there was no mention of the game in any of Valve's announcements - but many now speculate that Half-Life 3 could be a launch title for the new Steam system and controller.

"The natural thinking is surely they will show off Half-Life 3 when SteamOS is launched," said Mr Crossley.

"A lot of people are also saying that it would be exclusive to the Steam Machine - but that would be a very un-Valve-like thing to do. They've always been very open."

Assassin's Creed Movie on May 2015, it's Official!

Assassin's Creed is going to be getting a big-screen movie adaptation in theaters just two years from now!

The film’s development has been pretty slow, and at our last estimate we said that it would be unlikely to hit theaters until 2014 at the earliest. Michael Fassbender, whose decision to produce and star in the film was a major boost towards getting it made, is also committed to play Macbeth in a new adaptation that is set to begin filming at the end of this year, and is currently shooting X-Men: Days of Future Past.

It’s looking like Fassbender will start shooting Assassin’s Creed more or less as soon as he’s done with Macbeth. Twentieth Century Fox will distribute the movie through its partnership with co-producer New Regency Pictures, and has set a Memorial Day release date of May 22, 2015, according to a report by Coming Soon.

It’s a lucrative and important summer date to go for, and for the time being there’s no other competition in that slot, though there’s a possibility that Assassin’s Creed will find itself bunking up with Star Wars Episode VII since all three prequels opened the same week in May. By the time the movie actually arrives, two more Assassin’s Creed games will have come out, according to Ubisoft’s current annual release plan for the franchise.

Movies based on video games don’t exactly have the best reputation, and after the Disney adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time fell flat both critically and commercially, the newly formed Ubisoft Motion Pictures is taking no chances with creative control. It was reportedly the video game company’s protectiveness of the brand which led to Dreamworks, Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures all turning down the option to distribute it, and may have been what led to Sony abandoning the project as well.

With distribution organized, a release date set, funding in place, a star attached, screenwriter aboard, and the game producer’s keeping everything in hand, Assassin’s Creed seems to be on the right path, and could shape up to be one of the statistically rare instances of a video game movie that actually turns out well.

Assassin’s Creed is out in theaters on May 22, 2015.

Xbox Specifications

Xbox One is built
for the future.

The Xbox One is a powerful piece of hardware with 8GB RAM, 64-bit processors and plenty more muscle. But as time passes this hardware will age. As Xbox One Director of development Boyd Multerer pointed out, "You'll still have a limited number of transistors in your house; in your box."

Not much is known about the Xbox One GPU, but a Microsoft representative has told IGN "AMD is our primary partner for the custom silicon that makes up our GPU/CPU SOC that is the heart of Xbox One." [Source: IGN interview with Microsoft]

But the Xbox One is built to communicate with servers in the cloud to increase the computational potential of the system. Boyd continued "[As a developer] I can start doing things like shifting latency insensitive things to the cloud. You may have a limited number of transistors in your house, but you have an unlimited number of transistors in the cloud"

As bandwidth improves, there is potential for actual game computations to be off-loaded to servers in the cloud, essentially allowing the Xbox One to become more powerful over time as more and more transistors are connected to Microsoft's cloud infrastructure.

PS4 vs Xbox One: which is better?

The launches of Xbox One and PS4 are a two months away, as both consoles are about to go toe-to-toe this November. Gamers are putting their pre-order money down as if it's an expensive bet on which video game system will deliver the best performance over the next decade. Both systems are evenly matched in many respects and should be able to usher in the next generation of gaming that the Wii U hasn't been able to deliver. With E3 2013 in the books, we can finally get a better perspective as in a PS4 vs Xbox One comparison about their finer differences.

Which has the better controller?

The Xbox One controller vs the PS4 DualShock 4 controller is a debate that won't be won anytime soon, mostly because gamers' already have a locked-in preference.

The reason for this is that neither Sony nor Microsoft have radically changed their respective controllers over the years - they're more like evolutions from 2000 and 2001.

The DualShock 4 is a little bigger in the next-generation thanks to its unique front-and-center touchpad. Sony stuck with the dual analog sticks down in front, but at least have a central divot recess for easier gripping.

Microsoft also didn't mess with success, only slightly modifying its controller in the jump to the Xbox One. It's 40 design innovations are subtle, including the tweaked D-Pad on the bottom-left of the game pad and extra rumble features.

In testing the two controllers at E3 2013, Sony's DualShock 4 felt leaps-and-bounds better than the PS3 DualShock 3 controller, however, it was only catching up to comfort already provided by the Xbox 360 and now Xbox One gamepads.

Xbox One Kinect vs PS4 Eye

While Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will appeal to "core" gamers with mature launch titles, as evidenced by the strictly motion-less E3 lineup from Microsoft and Sony.

However, behind-the-scenes, the two companies are charging forward with motion-sensing games thanks to the Xbox One Kinect and PS4 Camera.

Microsoft designed the 1080p Kinect to track up to six skeletons for immerse video game effects that the company says is "human control for a human experience."

Expanding on that motto, the packed-in Kinect 2.0 will be able to process 2GB of data per second, analyzing more joints, the slight rotation of a wrist or shoulder and your heartbeat.

The PlayStation Eye, which will not come with the PS4 system, features two 1280×800px cameras inside a similarly shaped camera bar.

In addition to human interaction, the DualShock 4 controller will come into play with the PS4 camera thanks to its multi-colored light bar. It will also be compatible with those PS4 Move motion controllers that have gone unused.

Other differences

The look of the console, the feel of the controller and the way the games make you feel make up the main differences from which consumers will decide.

However, there are smaller factors potential PS4 and Xbox One buyers should consider when going to the store this holiday season.

It's a good idea to converse with friends to know which system they're going to buy. Since there's no such thing as cross-platform multiplayer, you may be split up when playing Call of Duty on PS4 when all of your friends own it for Xbox One. Both Microsoft and Sony are charging for multiplayer this generation, whereas PS3 gamers got to log into matches scott-free. However, only Microsoft is going to lock apps behind its Xbox Live paywall. Sony has confirmed that streaming video content like Netflix, Hulu Plus and MLB.TV on PS4 won't require a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Next-generation console buyers who don't plan on paying the yearly fee and do plan on using the system for entertainment purposes may want to weigh that into their final decision.

‘Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag’ Trailer Highlights Next-Gen Open World

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag boast their game's new environment features. The Sea Engine for the more realistic look of the sea floor and the water movements. Weather System for a more realistic and dramatic look of the gameplay. The what they call Boarding which focuses on the gameplay aboard the ships. Lastly, the Foliage for the dynamic 3D plants around the environment.

Next-gen Improvements

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag will let the play live the story of Edward Kenway. Controlling your own vessel in sea battles you are a Pirate trained by Assassins. You will visit tropical jungles and exotic cities that were alive and bustling during the time of pirates.

Here's the brief explanation of the Associate Producer of AC4 to the Environment Features of the Game
