Underwater tunnel bridging Europe and Asia: Turkey's Marmaray Project

For the first time, Asia and Europe will be bridged by a multi-billion dollar underwater railway tunnel at Turkey. Stretching 13.6 kilometer (8.5 miles), the tunnel shall pass under the Bosphorus Strait, one of the busiest maritime pathway in the world, will expectedly have a capacity of one and a half million people a day connecting people between two continents.

The rail system shall be built by a Turkish-Japanese consortium. Digging for the Marmaray uncovered approximately 40 thousand artifacts that can help archaeologists trace Istanbul's ancient civilization dating back 8,500 years, 2,500 more years than the believed evolution of Turkey's historic era.

The tunnel is also designed to handle earthquakes up to 9.0 magnitude.
